Google+ and Facebook seem to be caught in a world where each one wants to shine and come out as the best, actually disregarding Twitter which is odd, seeing as that at least Twitter offers the ‘gift’ of being ‘real-time’ where people do not have to wait for their messages to go out into the world and begin the branding. Of course, for consumers and customers no one really cares how much Google and Facebook fight. In fact, it very much reminds everyone of Apple versus Microsoft. In the end, all the people and businesses cared about was what the two companies were going to do for them. God bless America, right? In the end, when two monumental forces collide the consumer is the one that gets to reap the rewards. And that, my friends, is the way democracy should be. After all, we’re the ones working our behinds off for success, the least these megaliths could do is offer stellar services and a way for us to market and bring in the money.

Google+ is what the program is called. Not exactly the most creative of phrases, but Google has already proven to run the internet. More people get on their machines and go for Google research than anything else in the world – even grabbing a book from the library is out now.

When Google+ AP opened, millions received that colorful “platform” on their screens introducing the new-found program. Of course, I, as many others, didn’t even know what this was all about. The end-user simply saw this as yet another advertising option with no actual reasoning behind it. It took only about a week for the world to find out they were wrong. Google+ API has suddenly drawn-in consumers, editors, developers, and artists from all over the world trying to set up their “Buzz” and links in order to get their customers to know who they are and brand more and more every day. This, of course, IS close to the Facebook “Lists,” where the consumer or business gets their lists created for them. Seeing as that Facebook has been around a long time already, it will be interesting to see if many people use this specific marketing platform – or just continue with Facebook as they have been.

Google+ Search is something else that’s new – although, to this writer, let’s face it – if I want to search for something, I already head straight to Google anyway – nothing new there. Of course, with this addition, now a business or consumer can search for their topic, and then filter the information received into various results – categories such as: “Google+ Posts” and “Sparks.” As everyone already knows, the Facebook search is powered by Bing…and not very good.

Facebook is adding a few applications that are completely “Twitter-based,” as if seeing the monumental overload of people switching to Twitter in order to receive ‘real-time’ updates and be able to send ‘real-time’ messages to their followers.   Read More..>>>>>>

The statistics that we have spoken about regarding the absolute wretched care and conditions of nursing homes has also not been overlooked.  In fact, the statistics are frightening. And with each new day comes more statistics and news regarding the hideous care that our loved ones are receiving.  This situation is not only very difficult for the person needing care, but it is also a huge struggle for the families who absolutely love their mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, uncle, etc., and how much they truly do NOT want to put them into a nursing home situation.  They would love to provide either private care in their family member`s home, or find a way to simply quit their jobs to take care of their loved ones full-time. Of course, the latter solution is absolutely impossible.  This recession-wary economy is already scaring the “pants` off of everyone – and quitting a job is next to impossible.

The Precious Gems Publishing house has managed to take what was a mere dream and make is a reality.  In a matter of weeks my book went from a word document to an actual manuscript with a cover any author would go nutty for.  VAALBARA: Visions and Shadows have come to life before my eyes and I owe this wonderful experience to everyone at PGP!

Yes, it’s here!  The time has come for everyone to unlock the cabinet and take out their t-shirts, foam fingers, cheese-heads – whatever may be waiting for you – and sit in front of that television set to route for your one and only team to make it to the Super Bowl.  Of course, as all football fans know, we can look back on a time when our favorite team had that game-winning catch, touchdown, tackle, and/or interception, that brought our team to the ‘top’ of the NFL.  Of course, we can also sit down and look back on some seriously horrific seasons where our beloved team was flat on the bottom and had no chance to bring the Lombardi trophy home, let alone any trophy that year.

Well…the commentators, pickers, betters, and NFL pros are at it again, and picking the “best of the best” this year.  Of course, this writer’s team went away in the 80’s and haven’t been ‘picked’ since.  (BUT, the Niners will someday be back and surprise all of you!)  However, this article will show you what the consensus is for the ‘cream of the crop’ this time around – and whether your team has been picked to win it all!

Now, you may get angry that your favorite uniform is not at the “top” in this article, but just remember to blame the so-called professionals.  And always remember…they’ve been wrong plenty of times before!

In the AFC East, the New England Patriots defense is said to take it all.  Behind Albert Haynesworth, this two-time Pro Bowler is seen as the most dominant defender in the league.  He’s been given a new ‘home’ in New England, and Belichick is counting on this boy to resurrect his ‘all-star’ playing in order to make sure the Patriots take the AFC title.

The AFC North?  Well…almost all are behind the Pittsburgh Steelers to rise up and take it simply because of their running back, Mike Wallace.  This man is certainly the #1 receiver for the Steelers, but he does needs to learn how to take on those big defenders.  Many say that the defense is going to be just fine, and that Mike Wallace could be seeing, early next year, a spot at the Pro Bowl.  Others say that the Steelers will be back simply to avenge their Super Bowl disappointment…but, we shall see.

The AFC South, believe it or not, is the Houston Texans’ to lose.  They are on everyone’s lips as being the ‘best of the best,’ simply because they have opened their wallets WIDE for Jonathan Joseph – a Cornerback.  Considering the new bank account, this guy better be able to provide exceptional coverage, and many, many, many interceptions.  The pros are saying that this year is THE year to knock the Colts back a few pegs, so we’ll see if Indianapolis can prove them wrong!

And to finish out the AFC is the West and…the San Diego Chargers.  Apparently Larry English, a linebacker (who was drafted to replace Shawne Merriman) is the new ‘sack’ artist.  But, for a brief time so far, this young man has shown to be a little inexperienced at bringing those runners and that quarterback down to the ground.  Now, this is a team that usually gets off to some very slow starts, just to win their division at the end…but this may just be a time when the Chargers find themselves on a losing streak.

Enter the NFC.  This is the half that many pros can rarely call correctly.  These are the huge teams that everyone loves cheering for and, let’s face it, there are more ‘blue and silver stars’ and ‘NY’ caps, as there are total football fans, period.

Now, with the NFC East, the challenge has already begun with the expert “pickers.”  Most people’s first love seem to be the NY Giants.  However, there are others who say that the NY Giants will end up second place in the NFC East, as they also call for everyone’s favorite Cowboys to end up either third or dead last in their division.  Why is that?  Because the Eagles are supposedly going to take first right out of their hands.  It has been said that Michael Vick will make sure that Philadelphia is among the elite teams out there on the field this year, and although ‘The Dream Team’ may take a while to gear up – they will!

In the NFC North, perhaps the Pack is Back again?  That’s what they say.  No one can see any reason why the Super Bowl superstars aren’t even better than they were last year.  And their defense is supposedly the best the NFC still has to offer.  In fact, it would not surprise anyone to see back-to-back Lombardi trophies once again!

In the NFC South, the world is saying that the Falcons will spread their wings and head to the Super Bowl (if the Pack slips up), but the experts say…nope! Even though expectations will be sky-high this season, there are some outstanding issues, say the pros, that the Falcons will need to “tighten-up,” calling them to be the second-place finishers in the NFC South.

Who’s the call for number one in this division?  The New Orleans Saints are said to have it.  And, although the Falcons are capable of winning the division on the strength of their explosive offense, the Saints still have their stuff a little more together.  They are being called the “most complete team in the league,” and that their first place division win is almost a given.

And, of course, the NFC West.  The Seahawks are said to have the most “intriguing cast of playmakers” this year, and the versatility and explosiveness to make this a banner year for their organization.  Now, they are defending their division title and most say – bring it on.  The odd part?  There are those who say, not a chance this time around.  In fact, they are saying the Rams will be the ones to claim victory.

Of course, let’s all be honest with each other, people.  No one believed Joe Namath when he claimed the Jets would win.  No one thought Joe Montana and Jerry Rice would EVER become the unit they became.  And the Super Bowl Shuffle?  Come on….

Fist-fighting wasn’t what it is today.  When we all see someone ‘clocking’ each other in the streets, all we basically want to do is get out of the line of fire.  For us, it takes a ring and two men in boxing uniforms in order for us to feel the thrill of a true sport and real athletes taking and receiving the hits.  Only in this type of scenario, is fist-fighting something that is absolutely acceptable.

Well…that wasn’t so back when boxing first came into the world of sports.  As it was with wrestling, boxing dates back many, many centuries.  In fact, glimpses of boxing have been found by archaeologists in caves in Sumeria.  Depicted on Sumerian relief carvings dating back all the way to the 3^rd millennium BC; as well as even farther in carvings and relief’s found in ancient Egypt, fist-fighting was all the rage.  And the competitions were monumentally entertaining for the crowds.  (Of course, there wasn’t a whole heck of a lot to do back in those days, unless you visited the Library of Alexandria.)

Fighters and spectators are both depicted in beautiful colors on these relief’s.  There are bare-fisted contests shown, as well as other depictions with actual boxing uniforms in Assyrian, Babylonian, and Hittite artwork.

But it was in 1927 that Dr. E.A. Speiser – a famous archaeologist, discovered a Mesopotamian stone tablet in Baghdad, Iraq which depicted two men getting ready for a serious prize fight. The tablet is over 7,000 years old.  The earliest evidence for fist-fighting with gloves came from Minoan Crete that dates back to c. 1500–900 BC.  Yes, they were quite elegant back then, making sure that their fighters were appropriately attired in their full uniform for the ultimate protection.  (Odd, considering that they never minded throwing the fighters in with the lions when they were all done.)

Anyway, Sardinia is the place where actual statues representing boxing are hidden in the Parma mountains, and almost date back to the beginning of time (c. 2000–1000 BC).

The ancient Greeks were always quite the athletes, as anyone will tell you from the amazing relics that have been found strewn across their beautiful sites.  And when it came to Ancient Greek boxing, the relief’s and ‘scripts’ tell everyone about how it was to go to your local prize fight and have the most entertaining night of your life!

One boxer would signal that the game should begin by raising his finger high in the air.  Apparently, his opponent just had to be ready!  The Ancient Greeks also provide the world with our very first historical records of boxing as a formal sport; they codified a set of rules and staged tournaments with professionals.

But, of course, for the modern day people – the actual ‘birth’ of boxing comes when it was first accepted as a sport into the Olympic Games as early as 688 BC.  Therefore, boxing was perhaps the first real gentlemen’s sport to hit the athletic world.  In the famous Iliad, written by Homer, the first detailed account of a boxing match was offered.  According to the Iliad, Mycenaean warriors included boxing among their competitions when honoring the fallen with hugely amazing ceremonies.  Another legend says that the heroic ruler Theseus, said to have lived around the 9^th Century BC, invented a form of boxing in which two men sat face to face and beat each other with their fists until one of them was killed.  (So much for the gentlemen theory).

When boxing became an Olympic sport, it was called Pygme or Pygmachia.  Participants trained on punching bags, and fighters wore leather straps over their hands, wrists, and sometimes breast, to protect them from injury. The straps left their fingers free to do the damage.

Boxing seemed to disappear during the reign of the Roman Empire, but that was simply because  weapons became common once again, and interest in fighting with only the fist and not a gleaming sword, waned.  Different cities kept boxing – leaving the Romans to their brutal weapons.  Provinces of Italy, as well as a sport in Ancient Rus called Fistfight continued to the crowds amusement.

Now swords slowly lost their followers – as soon as the Roman Empire fell to its knees – which renewed the public’s interest in fencing with the fists.  The sport would later resurface in England and be called bare-knuckle boxing, or prizefighting.

Who was the first champion?  Well, seeing as that the ancients didn’t carve their ‘winners’ names into their caves, the first documented bare-knuckle champion was James Figg, in 1719.  This is also the same time when the word “boxing” came into play.

The funniest piece of information where this sport is concerned?  In 1681, the first recorded boxing match took place in England.  This is when the Second Duke of Albemarle was extremely bored, apparently, and put on a boxing bout between his butler and his butcher.  The butcher won the prize.

There were no written rules; no weight divisions or round limits; and, definitely no referee. In general, it was simply, chaos.  The first rules didn’t appear until a heavyweight decided in 1743 that his boxing buddies were really getting hurt!  He wanted to protect fighters in the ring where death was frequently occurring.  Under his rules, if you went down on the ground – after a count of thirty seconds -  the fight was simply over.  Hitting below the waist was stopped, and “mufflers,” a form of padded gloves, became the ‘norm.‘

One of the coolest fights of the century?  William Futrell remained undefeated until his one hour and seventeen minute fight at Smitham Bottom, Croydon on July 9, 1788 against a much younger John Jackson.  The big attendee – the Prince of Wales – got a huge kick out of the fight!

So, from Ancient Greece, to the power of the Roman Empire, to Homer’s own adventure – boxing has been a part of our world for a good long time.  BUT, there will never be anyone in history – whether on a relief carving or standing in the ring at Madison Square Garden – that will EVER be in the same class as the Great Ali!  Even the rough and tough Sumerians would agree with that one!

Although…I bet the match between the butcher and butler was a real treat!
